IoTBridge has cooperated with KTH and Politecnico di Milano in a research project on fatigue assessment of steel bridges. Menghini et al. have developed a method for estimating the load effect in complex structural systems by surrogate modelling feed by sensor data. A Swedish bridge instrumented by IoTBidge AB and monitored by our cloud-based solution is used as a case study for the research. The results show that the surrogate model approach can successfully predict the load effect at elements with a similar response from the external loading. It is attractive, especially at locations where localised damage has, or may, appear and where sensor placement is difficult. The outcome also shows the limitations where the method is unsuccessful, e.g., when very different behaviour is triggered by external loading.
